Tonya Byrd - Literacy Coach

Hello My Name Is...

Tonya Byrd

Welcome!  Thanks for stopping by to visit my page.  Fall is just around the corner.  I would like to welcome all students back to Viewmont!  It is so nice to see familiar faces and meet new friends!

It is going to be fantastic year!  Have your heard about Ready4K? It is a program developed at Stanford University that sends text messages to your phone to help you prepare your child for kindergarten.  The text tips focus on early language and literacy development. You can choose the language in which you would like to receive the tips. You will receive 3 tips a week. You can sign up for Ready4K by texting READCLT to 70138. The tips are free, but text messaging charges may apply, depending on your phone plan.

Did you know reading aloud is one of the best reading activities you can do to help your child be a successful reader?  When you read to your child, you are modeling fluency; you are developing their vocabulary; and if you talk about the book after you finish, you are helping them to comprehend what they read!  If you have a kindergarten through second grade student, these pre-reading skills are crucial for becoming a fluent reader.

But wait, studies show that reading aloud to older children can also improve their reading skills.  You can  also read a book together, each reading a page or chapter, to help strengthen their accuracy, fluency, and  comprehension!

Take some time to find out topics that interest your child, then visit the library to get started!

Happy autumn!

Sincerely,

Tonya Byrd
