                                          2019-2020 Opening Information

The classroom Sneak Peek will take place on Friday, August 23rd. K-2 students will have their Sneak Peak from 1:00-2:30. 3rd-5th Grade students will have their Sneak Peak from 2:30-4:00. This is a time to come in and find the location of your classroom and meet your teacher.

The first day of school is Monday, August 26th, except Kindergartners who have received a Staggered Start assigned day. Your school hours are 8:30 a.m. until 3:20 p.m. each day. You should arrive at school no earlier than 7:50 and will be allowed to go to your classroom beginning at 8:10. Being on time and ready to start the day when the 8:30 bell rings is a great way to start each day.

There is a $12.00 fee for instructional materials that is charged by Hickory Public Schools. This fee is payable on the first day of school. If your parent(s) plan to pay by check, please make it payable to Viewmont Elementary School. For families that have more than one child at the school, you may send one check; however please make sure to include the name(s) and teacher(s) of all children that the check covers.

Breakfast costs $1.25, lunch costs $2.45 and extra milk costs $.55. We no longer qualify for the Universal Breakfast and therefore breakfast will take place in the cafeteria beginning at 8:00. It is important to remember to bring your money, or pack a lunch, beginning the first day. If you were eligible for free or reduced meal benefits at the end of school in June, your eligibility will continue for the first ten days of this school year. Please do not forget to make arrangements for lunch before you leave home.

Car riders may be dropped off at the main entrance at the front of the school starting at 7:50. The traffic pattern works if everyone follows the plan. We encourage families to carpool if possible. Please have your parents include any carpool information on your transportation forms. Car riders are picked up in the afternoon between 3:20 p.m. and 3:45 p.m. You should be picked up in the loading zone and we have designated spaces for loading. This procedure has been developed for everyone’s safety.

Hickory Public Schools will post a listing of bus routes, stops and approximate times on their website ( Remember, riding a school bus is a privilege. You are expected to follow the bus rules closely so that the bus driver can transport everyone home safely.

On the first day of school, please have your parents send a note to your teacher informing her of your afternoon transportation plan (bus rider, car rider, after school program, van rider, or walker). This will serve as the transportation plan for the year and you will not be able to change your plan without a note from your parent or guardian. Please note that the principal or assistant principal must pre-approve any change that involves bus transportation.

Before and after school care will be offered in the gym by Kid Connection from 6:00 a.m. to 8:10 a.m. and from 3:20 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. There is a charge associated with this program. Your parents may make the arrangements with the Kid Connection personnel in the gym during their operating hours or call 464-9355.

I am sure you will want to note three upcoming dates. Monday, September 2nd, Labor Day, is the first holiday of the year and school will be closed. Our first PTA Meeting will take place on Tuesday, September 23rd at 6:00. This is our Open House Meeting in which teachers will share information with your parents about the upcoming year.

I hope I have answered many of your questions about the opening day at Viewmont. Teachers will provide you with further information to share with your parents. I am excited to get the school year underway and look forward to seeing you and your parents.

Spirit Fridays

We are continuing with our weekly Viewmont Spirit Day on Fridays.   On Fridays, we are asking that students and staff wear Viewmont shirts or our school colors (Royal Blue and White).  Look for information about ordering new shirts in the upcoming months.

Riding a school bus is considered a privilege.  Please remind your child that it is very important to follow the bus rules throughout the entire ride.  If you have moved and are continuing to take your child to an old bus stop, this practice is not allowed.  Please contact the school to see if you are still within our school zone and if there is a bus that serves your new residence.

Intersection of 4th St NW and 16th AV NW

If you cross at this intersection, you will have noticed a change.  The City of Hickory has fixed the intersection so that a 4-way stop occurs so that people can cross more safely.   Please follow the directions of the Crossing Guard and/or member of the Hickory Police Department.  They are also asking that if you need to cross, please be ready to cross in a group.  This procedure has also aided in allowing traffic to exit our parking lot quickly and safely.

Visitor Sign-in

Our new visitor sign-in system, LobbyGuard, features a touch screen and will take a picture and record the location in which you are visiting.   It will require a driver’s license in order to enter into our hallways.   This system runs a background check on all visitors, which provides us with additional security.
